Meet the Patels is a very comedic documentary but also has a good meaning behind it, this is due to different cultural people and the difficulty nowadays on finding someone who is compatible with their parent’s standards. This documentary starts off with an animated version of the main character, Ravi Patel. He explains that he has just broken up with his White girlfriend of two years, but he has been keeping her a secret from his family the whole time. It then carries on with his family on his family trip with the peer pressure of his mother, Mrs Patel, telling him he needs to find a woman. Ravi’s sister, Greta documents the whole film, this is so us as viewers can intake the Indian culture and see what it’s like to be in Ravis situation. In the car, his family are talking about how he has been single all of his life and teaching him how to ‘get the perfect girl’ they also talk about Ravi’s dad and his ‘arranged marriage’ with his mum. Then there is stock footage of him when he was younger, explaining when he was really young he hung out with Indians and watched indian films with no kissing but then as he got older he started befriending Americans and watched the American films with a lot more physical contact than the Indian films. Ravi explains that when he was younger dating was never allowed and that his family expected that he would grow up and date the perfect Indian wife. However, he didn’t expect to be dating a white American female, this is comparing the ideal Indian wife.
In conclusion, this comedy documentary creates parody by exploring the ideal Indian stereotypes and their strict culture and comparing it into the American laid-back community.
