Film noir is a genre and style of film, 'a style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace' - Google dictionary.
Most films that use the film noir style are crime-based dramas.
One of the conventions in film noir is the dutch-angles. Dutch-angles are created to help portray unease to the viewer, which is achieved by filming in an awkward slanted angle. They are normally used to either create a dramatic effect or to make the character look mysterious.
Another technique used in film noir is the low-key lighting, as mentioned earlier, most noir films are mystery or crime based and the filmmakers use this low light to create suspense and intrigue. As you can see I have tried to portray this by taking a photo in the street with the lamp post shining down, spotlighting the pavement. I have also tried to use the shadow effect, for example, the photo of the letterbox, on the road you can clearly see the shadows of the trees, which create a sinister effect. Some films noir also use the blind shadow technique to create the effect of 'mystery' : a small addition which creates a huge cinematic effect. Film noir also features characters including femme fatale, heroes, villains and detectives.
Look at my photos which show some of the conventions of film noir by depicting the dark lighting, shadows and silhouettes as well as the sinister dutch angles used.
