The 'Kuleshov effect' is a really important theory that relates to film in several ways. This theory suggests that screen content is more powerful then the individual images and easily can change the audiences opinions on the character. During my film and editing progress we can focus on how this juxtaposition technique can determine how our character is going to come across to the audience and whether we want him or her to be negatively or positively introduced.

In the text above I will take inspiration from Eisenstein for my future films as this theory is really unique and I like the effect of the way Eisenstein, in his film 'Battleship Potenkin' uses 'intellectual montage' this is when the audience see the happy villagers cheering on the sailors but then suddenly the 'Tsarist' troups come and slaughter them. This is to 'bring life to the chaos, madness and violence to the action'. The audience see the abrupt change from happy villagers to them being slaughtered and to the children being trampled on, which is visually horrifying. Eisenstein used many different types of montage for example, metric montage, rhythmic montage, tonal, overtonal and intellectual. He would use shots of unrelated images and shots to 'jolt' the audience.

Vertov however had a very different approach to montage in fiction films, he preferred documentary as it was more realistic and wanted to film far away from studios. Vertov wanted to film "reality" then use montage to create a meaning instead of telling a fiction story. For example, in one of his films, 'The Man With The Movie Camera' as the audience watch the action, they also get behind the scenes of the film as they'll be able to see the crew filming it, and halfway through we can see the editor cutting the film and arranging the scenes separately.

In my opinion all three theories have interesting potential and I would like to explore each of the montage techniques/ theories during my filming career. Eisenstein's theory I feel is more effective and dramatic to the fiction genre in film, and during my editing process I will research the Soviet Montage and all the other theorists in more detail.
